John Givens was born in 1943 in Greely Colorado.  He has been a life long Disciple and has served in all offices of the church itself.  He has spent most of his life working as a contractor and raising his five children with his lovely wife Karol.  In 1992, he received his calling to become a minister.  He first believed his ministry involved helping abused children; however, God had other plans for him.  In 1996, be came a licensed Disciples of Christ minister.

He and Karol were counseling parents at the Children’s Home in Amarillo and served as a part time minister in Fritch for two years.  Then in 1997, he became the full time minister for Central Christian Church in Childress, Texas.  Since then he has served as Co-director of Junior camp (1998), Eighters camp (1999), Area outreach (1999).  He was also the keynote speaker for the camp in 1998 and served as a counselor from 1996 to 1999.  In his spare time, he worked with the local Hospice organization in 1999, active with Ministerial Alliance since 1996 and served as the Treasurer (1999).  He has also served as a Chaplain for the local hospital.  He continues to increase his knowledge by receiving educational training in ministry through the Disciples of Christ leadership.

In the discussions the search committee has had with John and his wife Karol, their passion and strong desire to be a servant of the Lord is contagious. Both John and Karol fully believe Christ is in our midst believe everyone should be able to know the joy of God’s love.  They have believed this throughout their life and have raised their children with the same view.

John and Karol have expressed a strong desire to become a part of Community Christian Church.  In addition to the chance to become more of the grand parents they wish to be, John and Karol see great potential for growth in Community Christian Church.  John is experienced in such matters of growth being able to bring Central Christian from a membership of 60 members to 130 members in his three years.
